How We Work

Where our numbers come from, how we choose what to mention, and the rules we follow on every page.

Our sources

For anything about safety or health, we rely on official US sources and link to them on the page:

For product details we use the manufacturer's own published specifications, size charts and compatibility lists. When sources disagree, we say so and give the range.

How our calculators work

Every calculator shows its working: the assumptions behind each number, where they come from, and what you can change. A newborn might go through more diapers than average, or you might do laundry every day instead of twice a week, so you can adjust the inputs and see the result change. Calculators run in your browser; we don't store what you type into them.

The four timing labels

  • Buy before birth You'll need it in the first days at home.
  • Buy at 6 weeks Wait until you know your baby's size, feeding and habits, then buy the right one.
  • Wait until 4 months Not needed for a while. Buying early often means buying twice.
  • Skip Most families never miss it, or safety experts advise against it.

How we choose products

When we mention a product, it has to meet all of these:

  • It meets the current US safety standards for its type, where one exists.
  • It has no open recall in the CPSC database (or FDA, for formula) when we last checked.
  • It does the job at the point in time we recommend it for.
  • It's widely available in the US, and its maker publishes clear specifications.
  • It's good value at its price level. We aim to include a budget option.

We decide what to include and in what order before looking at whether a product pays us a commission. Many products we mention earn us nothing, and we often recommend free alternatives or skipping an item altogether.

Recall checks

Every month we check every product on the site against the CPSC recall database, and infant formula against FDA recalls. If a product is recalled, we remove it the same day and note the change on the page. Each product page shows the date of its last check.

What we never do

  • Claim we tested a product, or claim credentials or experience we don't have.
  • Give medical advice about illness, feeding problems, medicines or pregnancy health.
  • Rank car seats or sleep products for safety. For car seats we cover fit and compatibility only, and recommend having your installation checked by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.
  • Recommend sleep products the AAP advises against, such as crib bumpers, sleep surfaces inclined more than 10 degrees, weighted sleepers or swaddles, or products that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS (AAP safe sleep guide).
  • Use AI-generated pictures of babies, or present an illustration as a real photo.
  • Show prices that might be out of date. Check the retailer for the current price.

How pages are written

We use AI tools to help with research and first drafts. Every page is then reviewed, edited and approved by our editor, and every fact is checked against the sources we cite. Each page shows when it was last updated.
