The short answer

Babylist if you want items from many stores, plus cash funds, on one list.
Amazon if you are a Prime member and want one store with a huge choice and long returns.
Target if you like shopping and returning in store, and use Target Circle.

You don't have to pick one. Some families keep more than one, and each store's completion discount works on its own registry. Babylist can also hold items from Amazon and Target on the same list, though each store's perks apply to purchases made there.

What to put on it

Whichever registry you choose, keep it short and add things in the order you'll need them. The minimal registry checklist has 27 items with how many of each, and what to buy before baby shows what can wait. Your breast pump usually doesn't belong on a registry at all: most US health plans must cover one.
